Automate as much as possible (but no more)

At Crosswise Consulting, we love creating, managing, and delivering information that makes people’s lives easier. Even more than that, we love building up the processes and tools that make all that information work more efficient, consistent, and useful. There is no greater satisfaction than seeing automated information processes smoothly churning along.

A personal touch

You might be concerned that too many processes and automation will rob your work of its human touch. But these days, information processes are more like IBM’s Watson than Ford’s assembly line. You want the self-help tools in your product to feel like a patient person sitting next to the users, ready to help whenever they need it. To make that happen, your self-help tools need to be highly sophisticated on the back-end while being deceptively simple to the user.

Community Building

The most noble way that technical communicators can keep themselves in work is to direct their skills toward building a community. If writing a document is giving a man a fish, then building a community is teaching him how to fish. Better yet, it’s teaching him how to teach others to fish. But a successful community needs regular attention to keep it flourishing, which means feeding it company-created content and processing community-created content.
